Mainland Spain covers a vast spectrum of landscapes and culture from Santiago and the Basque country in the north, to Barcelona and Catalunya in the East, to Seville and Moorish Andalucia in the south, not forgetting the magnificent capital Madrid in the heart of the country surrounded by many fascinating smaller but significant cities such as Toledo, Avila and Segovia. We highly recommend the outstanding Parador hotels throughout the country which are often housed in magnificent historical buildings in prominent  positions. Each region has its own distinct local culture and cuisine, not to mention some outstanding wines such as the well known Ribera del Duero from Rioja. In fact the rise of Spanish wines over the last 20 years has been symptomatic of the rise of every  aspect of what the country has to offer in its post Franco era.

In addition to the mainland, Spain also offers some of the best European islands which are perfect for spring, summer and  autumn: Mallorca and Ibiza in the Mediterranean, and Tenerife and La Gomera in the Atlantic. Although well known as tourist destinations, there is also much for the discerning traveller to explore in terms of culture and unspoilt landscapes.
